♾️ Supporting families

💛 You don't have to raise a child with a disability alone.

Tsinat Institute is committed to positively impacting families of children with developmental disabilities to live the lives they deserve, with the support they need. We provide opportunities for their whole life in community — where they can live, worship, learn, work, and play alongside each other through all stages of life.

"Raising a child with a disability can be challenging, but you don't have to do it alone."

Tsinat Institute is here to support families of children with disabilities, providing opportunities for their whole life in their community where they can live, worship, learn, work, and play alongside each other through all stages of life. Our ministry intentionally focuses on positively impacting families of children with developmental disabilities, helping them live the lives they deserve with the support they need.

We provide leadership and self-advocacy training for youth groups with and without disabilities, working closely with the Ethiopian and Eritrean community, Ethiopian Orthodox churches, and Ethiopian Evangelical churches across the DC/MD/VA area.

Leadership, without exception

Nurturing visionary leaders, regardless of disability.

Every young leader we work with — disabled or not — gets the same seat at the table. The numbers and story below are a small part of what that looks like in practice.

"Tsinat Institute didn't just support my son — it gave our whole family a community that saw him as a leader, not just a diagnosis."
— Illustrative testimonial. Swap in a real quote from a parent, graduate, or partner church once you have one on record.

Consider also adding a leadership & board directory and a link to your annual report or Form 990 — both are things a first-time donor typically looks for before giving.

However you're able to give, every contribution helps young leaders grow and families feel supported.

Give $50 / month

Prefer to send directly? Pay via Zelle to (301) 728-5345 — reaches Tsinat Institute directly, with no platform fees.

Mockup of a simplified, one-step give flow. This gift is processed through Zeffy — you'll see an optional tip prompt at checkout that supports Zeffy, not Tsinat; feel free to adjust or remove it. 100% of your donation amount still comes to Tsinat Institute either way.

Other ways to give

Why Zeffy and Zelle are the primary options: Neither charges Tsinat Institute a platform or transaction fee — every dollar donated reaches the organization. Zeffy covers its own costs by inviting donors to add an optional tip at checkout instead of taking a cut from the nonprofit; that tip is easy to lower or remove. Zelle transfers move directly from your bank with no fee on either side and usually arrive within minutes, though Zelle doesn't generate an automatic receipt — contact us if you need one for your tax records. PayPal stays available as a secondary option for donors who prefer it, though PayPal's standard nonprofit rate (1.99% + $0.49 per transaction, once the account is set up for charity checkout) is deducted from the gift before it reaches us — and PayPal's native recurring/monthly giving tools are more limited than Zeffy's.

🤝 Disability › Cultural Broker

Cultural Broker

Tsinat Institute provides support and guidance to families raising a child with special needs. It is important to remind yourself that you are not alone; there are others out there who can relate to your circumstance.

The Cultural Broker service functions as a bridge between individuals with disabilities and broader cultural communities. Tsinat offers interpretation, translation, and guidance services tailored to Ethiopian and Eritrean cultural contexts, working to eliminate communication barriers and promote cultural sensitivity in service delivery.

~15M people with disabilities in Ethiopia (17.6% of population) Only 3% of Ethiopian children with disabilities attend school ~98% of Ethiopian persons with disabilities in the U.S. depend on government or family support

Training includes personal skill development, social skills, and self-esteem building. Tsinat adapted its delivery methods during COVID-19, offering both virtual and in-person sessions following Maryland safety guidelines.

🇪🇹 Disability › Ethiopia Project

Ethiopia Project

Ethiopia is a land-locked country with an economic reliance on the agricultural industry. The country has experienced a violent political history, with ongoing tension within the political sphere. Key challenges include a shortage of available drinking water and limited access to quality education; the government struggles with enforcing rule of law, including documented concerns about detainees' ill-treatment and unfair trials.

Donation update — July 27, 2022

Tsinat received 11 boxes of donations of adult diapers and one box of gloves, supporting people who are blind, deaf, and living with intellectual disabilities. Shipping remains a real cost — about $260 per piece of luggage — so contributions toward that cost help just as much as the items themselves.

Urgent appeal — September 2026

Urgent appeal: we have collected about 10 suitcases of adult diapers for our fellow Ethiopians living with disabilities who are unable to care for themselves, but we are struggling to ship them — we cannot afford to pay $260 per suitcase to send them by air. If you are traveling to Ethiopia, please help us by carrying one suitcase, half a suitcase, or whatever amount you are able to take. You are also welcome to deliver them yourself to families in need and send us photo confirmation. Our storage space is very limited right now, so we urgently need to reduce this stock — please reach out if you can help.

The Chlorpyrifos Pesticide Ban and Its Impact on Our Health

Balanced nutrition plays a major role in our overall health. But beyond that, contaminated food has an even greater impact on our health. On this point, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently decided that various Chlorpyrifos pesticide products can no longer be used.

These Chlorpyrifos products are pesticide chemicals sprayed on fruit, and for the past 50 years they have been sprayed on major U.S. food crops such as wheat, apples, cherries, and citrus. Once it enters the human body, it is a chemical that disrupts the function of nerve cells. After people are exposed to chlorpyrifos, it travels to every part of the body. Chlorpyrifos itself is not toxic, but when it mixes with other substances in the body it forms a toxic chemical called oxon. In this form, chlorpyrifos binds to many enzymes so that nerves and muscles stop working properly. In young people, it causes changes in social behavior and mental development. In children especially, it can permanently damage the brain, causing mental illness, cognitive impairment or a lowered IQ, and memory loss, along with other lasting physical harm.

In general, children are more vulnerable to pesticides than adults, so pesticides can enter their bodies differently. Because children put their hands in their mouths more often than adults do while playing, their risk of pesticide exposure is higher.

Researchers studied the blood of women exposed to chlorpyrifos and their children’s blood for three years starting from birth. Children who had chlorpyrifos in their blood had more developmental delays and disorders than children who did not.

Even though all of this was known, the manufacturing companies argued for the past 50 years that it did not cause disease. Although the EPA decided in 2021 to ban the chemical, the manufacturers appealed to a higher court in 2023, and after the litigation, the court issued its final ruling in 2024 ordering the chemical banned.

Although the ban on Chlorpyrifos was decided in 2024, the EPA has still allowed it to be used on some crops rather than banning it across all crops. If you ask why it is still used when its health risks are known, the answer is money and profit. Chlorpyrifos is not alone — other similar pesticide and herbicide chemicals are still used at high levels. We can protect our health, as much as possible, by washing fruit thoroughly and, where affordable, choosing organic food free of these chemicals. Regular exercise and physical activity can also help the body clear accumulated chemicals.

For more information, see the general Chlorpyrifos fact sheet. npic.orst.edu

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Who are Tsinat Institute's programs for?

Young leaders with and without disabilities, and families raising children with developmental disabilities — primarily across the DC/MD/VA area, working closely with Ethiopian and Eritrean community churches.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes — Tsinat Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. You'll receive a receipt for your records.

How much of my donation goes directly to programs?

This is exactly the kind of number worth publishing here once you have it — donors consistently rank program-spending ratio as one of the top things they check before giving.

How do I enroll my child or apply as a young leader?

Start with the three-step process above: reach out through the contact form, meet with the team, and enroll in the next available cohort.

Do you offer services in Amharic or Tigrinya?

Our team works closely with the Ethiopian and Eritrean community and Ethiopian Orthodox and Evangelical churches — reach out to ask about language support for your family.

Can I volunteer without making a financial donation?

Yes — volunteering time and skills is one of the three ways to get involved. See "Other ways to give" below or use the contact form.
